Ravensbourne and Hiut shape next generation of sustainable fashion designers
Ravensbourne University London and Hiut Denim Company held an exclusive sustainability event at London's Truman Brewery on Thursday 23 January.
The event, Denim Innovation, allowed leading brands, industry professionals, and Ravensbourne students alike to showcase the latest developments in sustainable denim production and eco-conscious fashion.
Among Ravensbourne’s co-collaborators at Denim Innovation was Hiut Denim Company, a Welsh brand whose denim is renowned for its high quality and sustainability. Hiut’s commitment to the latter is underpinned by ‘respect for the planet’s valuable resources’ as they seek to reject traditionally wasteful and toxic production methods in favour of progressive, sustainable alternatives. Hiut’s dedication to changemaking through these new ways of working with denim can help pave the way for the fashion industry to follow suit.
Sara Ladd, Creative Director at Huit Denim Company, said: “We've worked with Ravensbourne University London for two years now, and they're really championing fashion."
Quote from Hiut
It’s great to see the way that they're teaching the students. The work they displayed was impressive, and there was a lot of really good storytelling.”
Hiut, joined by speakers from other emerging sustainable fashion brands, denim mills, and charities, provided ample opportunities for Ravensbourne students to hear from, network, and collaborate with industry professionals. A core part of the University’s mission, it was energising to see Denim Innovation as an environment for mutual learning between current students and industry leaders, all with the common goal of driving radical and long-lasting change within the fashion sector.
As a platform for close collaboration between current Ravensbourne students and industry, as well as for demonstrating the vast potential for making fashion and design more sustainable and responsible industries, Denim Innovation was a microcosm of what Ravensbourne is striving for.
Gurmit Matharu, Fashion Programme Director at Ravensbourne University London, said: "Students need to understand how the industry is evolving and how clients are thinking. By embedding sustainability at the core of Denim Innovation, we aim for our students to drive change in the industry. They must be equipped to absorb this knowledge, apply it in the workplace, and shift perspectives."
Quote from Gurmit
At Ravensbourne University London, sustainability is integrated into every fashion module, and we’ve committed to partnering only with industry leaders who prioritise it themselves.”
The institution operates at the intersection of creativity, technology, and business, so is therefore uniquely placed to continue driving change in all three strands through events such as these.
