Ravensbourne University London has been selected as being highly commendable for the category of ‘Widening Participation or Outreach initiative of the year’, chosen by a panel of education experts at London Higher.

Andy Rees, Dean at Ravensbourne University London, said: “We are delighted to have been recognized for an award in this category. We are extremely passionate about widening participation and outreach here at Ravensbourne and our team work tirelessly to build innovative ways of connecting with prospective students from typically disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The selected project called ‘Breakthrough’ was a 6-week participatory project for creative learning aged 16 and upwards from London and the surrounding areas.

The project aimed to address the deficit in cultural and creative experiences due to the COVID19 pandemic. Sessions took place on Saturdays at Ravensbourne University London's building in North Greenwich and created a space for learners to try something new, develop existing skills, further their knowledge and interact with those outside their usual ‘bubble’. Sessions included: street photography; fashion promotion; set design; advert filming and more.

Over a 6 week duration, forty learners took part and were all offered the opportunity to book a ‘pre UCAS’ interview at the end of the project.

Hattie Moore, Outreach Officer at Ravensbourne University said, "It was great to oversee a project from design to delivery and execution and to work with fantastic academic colleagues and student ambassadors. The aspiring creatives who attended the project were vivacious, enthusiastic and had some innovative approaches to their practice."
