Chris Fynes
The Money Programme political cartoons
A series of political cartoons produced for ‘The Money Programme’ by Christopher Fynes during the 1970s and 80s. Most of them were stills, produced on the day of the programme, for live transmission to a script read by the presenter, usually Peter Hobday, who ultimately moved to the ’Today’ programme on BBC Radio 4.
Subsequently, there was a two-month exhibition of these drawings at the Stock Exchange in London, which was previewed on ‘The Money Programme’. This was organised by the programme’s Editor, Paul Ellis and the Chairman of the Stock Exchange, Sir Nicholas Goodison. The drawings were kindly framed for exhibition by Don Shaul, a colleague in the BBC Graphic Design Department.
Chris Fynes produced a number of other cartoons in this style as animated films, which were filmed stop frame from cut-out pieces of cardboard with articulated joints. ‘The Money Programme’ producer Peter Meloy wrote the scripts and graphics assistant Maeve Stephens painted some of the colourful backgrounds and animation. Many of these sequences were filmed by BBC Rostrum Cameraman Peter Willis.
