Concept and creative process
Opening titles for ‘The Money Programme’, a finance and business affairs series offering the latest stories from the world of business and work which ran from 1966 to 2010. Designer Chris Fynes recalls how the shoot of his titles was done: “For the title sequence a rotating dowel was mounted on a jig to which a pound note was attached and then gradually unfurled a frame at a time. These shots were then turned into photographic separations which were cut-out and made into pegged artwork, from which corresponding mattes were also made, cut-out of black sugar paper. Aerial-image was then used to composite the artwork, in single frames, with background footage of a spinning title, various shots from production and a shot of a hand grabbing money (reverse shot upside-down). The logo at the end of the sequence was made up from pegged artwork with corresponding mattes to reveal footage of a previously shot model of a spinning globe. The sequence was shot on 35mm, but because of production requirements, had to be reduced to 16mm for transmission”.
