Fashion alumna awarded Samsung EGO Prize at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Madrid

Publication date:

Ravensbourne BA (Hons) Fashion alumna, Fatima Miñana, has been awarded the Samsung EGO Prize at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) Madrid — the leading showcase for raising the profile of Spanish designers around the world.

Samsung’s EGO platform has been running since 2008, aiming to promote up-and-coming fashion designers, ‘continuing on the path of evolution of discovering new styles and innovating trends.’ Fatima received the award for ‘Best Young Talent’ for her ‘Geometry of Fear’ A/W 2020 collection. Her designs take inspiration from the sculptural movement of the same name, which saw young artists of the 1950s use jagged, angular designs to express their feelings of anguish and discomfort following the Second World War. Graduating from Ravensbourne in 2018, ‘Geometry of Fear’ makes up Fatima’s debut womenswear collection, blending relaxed silhouettes with pieces directly inspired by the sculptural movement. Contrasting muted colours with bright neon and rough textures, Fatima sought to express feelings of restlessness and anxiety through her collection.

Commenting

Commenting, Fatima said, “I am very happy and surprised to have received the award. As it was the first time I was showing a collection at MBFW Madrid, I did not think I could win it. This award reassures me that I should keep pursuing my dreams. It drives me and gives me strength to keep working. My work has received a lot of publicity from the award and it has also given me the opportunity to show my collection at MBFW Tbilisi.”

Gurmit Matharu, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Fashion said, “I’m delighted to see Fatima achieving such success only two years after graduating with us. While at Ravensbourne, she always pushed boundaries and created a striking collection taking influence from the Gutai Group in Japan. It’s great to see her looking to the wider art world for inspiration, her collection presented at Madrid Fashion Week shows her skill as a designer and a creator of modern femine form. She is a very deserving winner.”
