Concept and creative process
‘Third Eye’ was a series of personal views from the Third World. The producer Anthony Isaacs, who had travelled all over the world and brought back various artefacts, suggested using some for this sequence. It was agreed that the masks would be an appropriate basis for a sequence. I borrowed the masks and each one was lit against black in a studio. A moving gobo was used over the main light to create the dramatic effect. Each mask was shot with a zoom in. The masks were positioned so that they could be lined up in the edit. The lighting effect with the gobo helped the transitions look even more seamless as the black shadow acted almost like a wipe.

Third Eye storyboard and press pack

The storyboard is hand-drawn by Liz Friedman and indicates how the masks are all in register to each other and have a shadow moving from one side to the other. When the crossover fade occurs (the mix) the next mask should appear in the black area first and the moving shadow will hide the take-over point. The storyboard would have been used just as an aid to explain the idea directly to the producer or director.
