Talking Heads - A Lady of Letters (1988)

Concept and creative process

The opening titles for one of Alan Bennett's much-loved collection of monologues, which gave us a glimpse into the lives of five ordinary British people. The title sequence was composed of shots of Alan Bennett, rotoscoped from live action clips (i.e. every other frame traced from projected frames of the original film) to make line animation artwork, which was placed over a textured background and filmed on a rostrum camera.
