Strangers and Brothers (1984)

Concept and creative process

A title sequence for the drama serial ‘Strangers and Brothers’, C.P. Snow's epic political drama. A static frame (one frozen image) was chosen from the handshake which was shot on 35 mm film in a studio using hand artists. This was then printed onto 20 x 16 photographic paper to be used as a template for the modelmaker Alan Kemp to create an exact replica in resin of that frozen image, so that it could be cross-faded later to give the impression of the hands turning into stone. This was repeated for the male and female handshake also. The lettering was given to the modelmaker as photoset type on a cel overlay at the correct size relating to the print of the hand. The modelmaker could then use this as an exact template to create the image and the type as if in stone.
