Concept and creative process
'Sportsnight', the BBC midweek evening sports magazine programme, provides coverage of the whole sporting spectrum. This title sequence from 1993 was designed by Rod Ellis, who also designed the generic BBC Sport brand logo which preceded it and all other BBC Sport programmes and events at that time. For the BBC Sport ident the client was wedded to the concept of a ball rotating round planet Earth - so the aim was to make the globe look less like a shiny billiard ball, with more subtle colours and layers, and the satellite rings appearing as waves of electric energy. The CGI animation was created by Infynity graphics. The new 'Sportsnight' title sequence was filmed in full colour, but avoided any specific team colours. Rod Ellis specified black and white outfits for the performers whom he shot on 35mm film against white backgrounds, with all of the colour created by combinations of coloured lighting gels.
