Concept and creative process
Stendhal's classic novel 'Scarlet & Black' has been adapted for television several times. In this 1993 version an atmospheric moving tableau was shot monochrome for the titles, but with details colourised in red. The red represented the army, the black represented the church - two poles in the struggle within the heart of the play's hero Julian Sorel. The title shoot required a 35mm film live action studio shoot with artistes, set, costume designer, make-up artist, armourer and props.
