Concept and creative process
‘Auntie’s Bloomers’ was a blooper show, consisting of out-takes from shows where an artist had made a hilarious unintentional mistake. The series ran with variations in the show’s name from late December 1991 for a whole decade on BBC One, hosted by Terry Wogan. For this early title sequence a traditionally animated scenario was devised, involving the delivery of a new BBC flag which, when run up the flagpole, turned out to be a large pair of old-fashioned bloomers, fluttering embarrassingly in the breeze – a blooper in its own right. The first two episodes of the show were produced by Celador, an independent production company, and after the expiry of that contract, the show was produced internally at the BBC from 1994 onwards.
