Menace (1970)

Concept and creative process

The drama strand required a generic sequence that would brand all of the plays in the series as emanating from the same strand under the title 'Menace'. To achieve this uniformity Alan Jeapes created a mesmerising background, shot on film on a computer controlled rostrum camera, exploring the slit-scan technique which sucks the audience into the action that followed. He created a logo for the series title, split horizontally and fractionally misaligned, which was superimposed over the background, coming into focus while travelling towards the viewer. The remainder of the sequence was used as a background for the credits of each play in the strand, which would have been superimposed over it from slides in the studio gallery, and could be faded out at any required length.
