Larry Grayson's Generation Game (1979)

Concept and creative process

A long running series in which Larry Grayson, Isla St Clair and surprise guests joined in with family couples from all over the country in games that were playable at home and in tests of their general knowledge, skill and ingenuity. The title sequence played on the catch phrase "shut that door" and the theme music which was supplied in advance. The main artwork consisted of the logo, which I designed and roughed out to size and which was then redrawn and hand lettered in ink by artworker Ted Cload. A 20 x 16 inch photographic print was produced and given to BM animation where Barry Merritt animated the sequence. The shafts revealing the logo were produced by cutting shapes in blue cinemoid and placing them over the artwork. The twinkling lights were shot on a separate run back-lit in-camera. These were created simply by small holes in black card with a lens filter and light exposure.
