Horizon (1982)

Concept and creative process

The title sequence for a science-based, long-running documentary series ‘Horizon’ was filmed on 35mm by Barbra Flinder using a snorkel lens supplied and operated by Laurie Frost from Kaleidoscope/Lee International Studios, Wembley. The lens enabled the camera to swoop in close-up across and over the ‘Horizon’ logo in one fluid move without losing depth of field. It gave the shot a monumental quality and the appearance of a motion control shoot, when in fact it was hand operated. The logo was made of Perspex, sprayed matt white, and measured 24cm high and 24cm deep.
