Concept and creative process
The science series ‘Horizon’ tells amazing science stories, unravels mysteries and reveals worlds you've never seen before. Roger Kennedy’s design for the generic titles for the 1974 season was a superbly simple solution, using the laser beam's ability to illuminate over distance. The three-dimensional polystyrene Logo ‘HORIZON’ was raised mechanically through the clouds of dry ice in silhouette and cast long dark shadows across the swirling cloud surface. A separate light illuminated the front of the Logo on cue as the camera tracked in. This sequence remains one of the most memorable of all of the many different opening titles the programme has had since its inception in 1964.
