Concept and creative process
BBC Religion commissioned the broadcast design team at BBC Resources at New Broadcasting House in Manchester to produce a new identity, including logo, onscreen design system and title sequence, for BBC Religion’s flagship factual documentary series ‘Everyman’, which covered important topical human issues. The client at BBC Religion was ‘Everyman’ executive producer Richard Denton. Designer Gregory Millar was supported by senior designer Mark Allen. A key creative objective was to show that ‘Everyman’, long respected as an intellectually challenging brand, needed to refresh its identity in a bold, contemporary way. A powerful theme tune, composed by Ded Good Music, complemented the strong title sequence visuals with a pulsating and urgent audio track. The creative thought for ‘Everyman’ was ‘Where Real Stories Cut Through’. In the title sequence we travel across an anonymous, cold landscape when suddenly a corkscrew-like blade cuts through the gritty surface. As the blade continues to ascend, we see live action video clips showing a variety of significant human life experiences. We eventually fly over the top of the blade to see it reveal itself as the ‘E’ in the ‘Everyman’ logo. The sequence was shot at Sprockets Studio in Manchester and post-produced on Quantel Harry at 4:2:2 also in Manchester.
