Concept and creative process
The ‘Blue Peter Special Assignment: Rivers’ consisted of five programmes about different rivers of the world. Presenters Valerie Singleton and Peter Purves travelled the length of the rivers, reporting on the people and places around them. This was a low budget solution utilising one piece of artwork and a series of photographs from the BBC picture library. The photographs were pegged in position to appear within the space in the middle of the cartouche artwork. It was shot all in-camera on a 35mm rostrum camera.
Illustration Artwork - Fen Field.

Blue Peter Special Assignment Rivers - title cartouche final with camera move mark-up
The simple idea consists of the name of the programme within a cartouche (border) which initially houses the photos used in the sequence. The artwork is therefore layered. The background is a coloured paper on top of which is pegged the cartouche. The blank space in the middle allows the photos which are also pegged for positioning, to be seen through this gap. The final artwork consists of a cell overlay with the multi-coloured text itself. The artwork was filmed on a rostrum camera
