Better than New (1982)

Concept and creative process

Eight programmes about renovating old furniture at home. This sequence hangs on the idea of actually creating the main title caption and the names of the two presenters in the form of antiques being renovated. The technique of marquetry was used and the two captions are made up of different wood. Specialist antique restorers were researched and top marquetry professionals, who had recently restored the Orient Express, were commissioned. The sequence was lit and shot in a studio on 35mm film. The maintitle artwork was covered in black boot polish which was then rubbed off during the shoot to gradually reveal the logo. This was intercut with other renovation style set-ups, such as planing, chiselling etc. Brian Tolton, hand artist was used to carry out these tasks.

Lit and shot by Douglas Adamson at Stewart Hardy Films, Borehamwood.

Concept, live action direction and design - Liz Friedman.
