Concept and creative process
‘Slinky’ was one of the ideas produced for the 1994 Winter Campaign for BBC2 presentation, which included ‘Bungee’, ‘Cliffhanger’, ‘Meccano’, ‘Op Art’, ‘Greenhouse’, ‘Ski Jump’, ‘Goal’, and ‘Magnet’. The campaign had no overall theme but many different ideas and each idea was produced using a different technique. 'Slinky' was created as a stop-frame animation. A model slinky was built to move fluidly and was supported by a rig. The model had to be re-positioned and re-rigged for each frame. A clean beauty pass of the background only enabled the rig to be painted out frame by frame in post-production. Great care was taken to replicate the movement of the slinky and the feeling of weight as it fell forward. A video playback monitor was used to record the animation during the shoot in order to spot any errors before the 35mm film was developed and the set broken down.
