Concept and creative process
Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly co-hosted ‘The Ant & Dec Show’, a variety show with music, comedy, audience participation and guests. Andy Carroll recalls working on the series: “The titles were all shot in and around Television Centre in 1995. I designed the logo and tried to use as many of TVC’s wonderful architectural elements as I could - those South Hall stairs were super. The Maiden-owned ‘Toblerone’ sign was given to us for free - but literally only for as long as we needed it to get all the shots. They replaced the logo very soon after. It was a fun show to work on, and it actually won a BAFTA award. At that time Ant & Dec were very young, fresh off the set of ‘Byker Grove’, and they were good to chat to. They also remembered your name when you appeared on the studio floor. I remember one segment of this show that caused a lot of controversy, it was an item called ‘Beat The Barber’, for which I also did animated stings. It was a quiz and if the kids got the answers wrong, they forfeited their hair! One week a young girl with lovely, very long, red hair was being quizzed and she got the question wrong…There were letters to ‘Points Of View’ by the dozen to complain about that!”
