Concept and creative process
In 1961 Abram Games's 'Bats Wings' design for the BBC tv symbol was replaced by an altogether less elaborate affair. It was a simple circle containing the letters BBC tv in bold sans serif italic on square and rectagular blocks. The blocks became an enduring design element in the BBC's on-screen presentation for its corporate or channel logos, at times rounded, at times square or even slanted, an incarnation known affectionately as the 'Flying Bricks'. It is a design element that has survived the test of time and is still in use since the last redesign in 1997. This design lasted until 1963.
