Ravensbourne tutor nominated for BAFTA Cymru

Ravensbourne tutor Richard Hughes has been nominated in the ‘Photography Factual’ category at British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Cymru Awards.

The category looks for the best in cinematography work across the documentary format.

The nomination was made for Richard’s outstanding work as Director of Photography on the Oxford Scientific Films production ‘The Secret Life of Farm Animals', which takes an indepth look at how farm animals live and what makes them happy. 

The series visits a variety of farms across Wales, exposing a host of misconceptions about farm animals, exploring how they communicate, their emotions and the strong bonds they create with humans. The series was screened on BBC Four and is currently available via BBC iPlayer. 

Richard began his career working as an editor spending over ten years working on both TV documentaries and feature films. Over his career he has had the opportunity to work with the likes of Sir David Attenborough, Tom Hiddleston and Steve Backshall.  His recent clients have included: BBC One, BBC Two, Channel 4, Channel 5, Love Nature and Smithsonian.

Commenting on the announcement, Richard said, “It is a great honour to be nominated for this award. I have had the opportunity to film wildlife across the world but capturing unique behavior in animals that are so familiar and close to home was, in some ways, even more challenging. It required a huge amount of focus and dedication and I am pleased that this series has been recognised by this nomination.”

The results will be announced on Sunday 13 October at the 28th BAFTA Cymru Awards at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, presented by Huw Stephens. Find out more at BAFTA Cymru.
