Digital television students collaborate on large-scale broadcast at Adrian Flux Arena

Third year BA (Hons) Digital Television Production and BSc (Hons) Digital Television Technology students Cesca Davey, Jacob Morris, Elliott Ramdass and David Trollope collaborated with fellow students, alumni and a number of major broadcasting organisations to deliver a professional standard broadcast for Trackstar Racing from the Adrian Flux Arena in King’s Lynn, Norfolk.

The stock car racing event was streamed live on Trackstar Racing’s Facebook, generating over 20,000 views. Cesca, Jacob, Elliott and David formed a crew of nearly 30 people, including students from all three year groups of the BA (Hons) Digital Television Production and BSc (Hons) Digital Television Technology courses at Ravensbourne.

As well as live-streaming the races which took place on the day, the broadcast included an introductory segment on Kings Lynn and the Adrian Flux Arena, as well as interviews with racing drivers competing in the event.

Supporting equipment was provided by major broadcasting organisations including EVS, Vislink Technologies and NEP Group, who work on everything from The Oscars to the Olympics. Additionally, EVS and Vislink Technologies visited Ravensbourne ahead of the event to offer training and guidance to students.

Commenting, Cesca said: “Producing this show was a great experience. Motorsport broadcasting is very new to me but it helped to have a supportive team backing us all the way. As a team we planned and managed this broadcast by ourselves which included managing the crew, getting the correct equipment and liaising with the track and event management.”

Jacob added: “This was a totally new challenge for me. Sports are a massive part of the live television industry, but it's not something that can easily be introduced at degree level. The fact we not only had the chance to do it, but were able to do it to an immensely high standard is testament to the level of talent on Ravensbourne's broadcast courses.”

Ian Futter, EVS’ Dyvi production switcher specialist, added: “I’m proud to know I’m clearly working with students who will undoubtedly be working professionally, switching top level broadcast productions in the not too distant future. The final result was excellent too, showing off a wide range of broadcast competencies and abilities both on EVS’ Dyvi production switcher and its LSM remote.”

We have always had a great relationships with Ravensbourne who attend our Student Open Day each year and some of their students are also in our mentoring programme. It was great to see them in action as future technologists, engineers and broadcasters.”
