Activate your Student IT account

Please complete this process on your mobile phone

This page takes you through activating your IT account and enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA).
You must complete both steps in this process to be able to use the University's IT systems, including Canvas, our online learning environment.

What you need...

After you enrol, you will receive an email to your personal address informing you that your Ravensbourne IT account has been created. If you haven't received the details please let us know asap. 

Before you start you will need three things:
  1. The email that was sent to you when your account was created which has your username and default password (this would have been sent to the personal email address you registered with)
  2. A mobile phone with access to the Apple Apps store or the Google Play store where you should download Microsoft Authenticator and Microsoft Outlook.
  3. Download these apps

DO NOT try to sign in or use these apps just yet - Just have them downloaded.

Let's get going...

  1. Secure your account
    Many services will require you to use Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to approve access. Once you have downloaded the Microsoft Authenticator app, follow these steps to set up MFA on your account.

    Using your mobile phone:

    1. Go to ravensbourne.sharepoint.com
    2. Enter your username and the default password that was emailed to you
    3. Select “Next” on the screens that follow until you see "Pair your account to the app by clicking this link"
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions based on your device type…

    For iOS (Apple):

    a. The Microsoft Authenticator app will open automatically. Do not manually add an account.
    b. Return to your web browser and click Next.
    c. A code will appear on the screen.
    d. A notification will be sent to your phone. Tap on it to open the Microsoft Authenticator app.
    e. Enter the code displayed on your browser into the app.
    f. Return to your web browser and click Next, then Done.

    For Android:

    a. Return to your web browser and click Next.
    b. A number will appear on the screen.
    c. A notification will be sent to your phone. Tap on it to open a pop-up window.
    d. Enter the number displayed in your web browser into the pop-up.
    e. Return to your web browser and click Next, then Done.

    Your MFA setup is now complete.

     

  2. Reset your password
    Once your MFA setup is complete, click here to set your own password.

    Passwords for your Ravensbourne account must meet the following:
    1. Must be at least 14 characters in length.
    2. Must not contain common passwords, or words or elements of your REAL NAME, or things easily associated with you personally. Our systems will reject words such as Ravensbourne, London, Arsenal, and March etc automatically.
    3. Must include characters from at least 3 of the 4 following categories:
    - Uppercase letters of European languages (A through Z)
    - Lowercase letters of European languages (A through Z)
    - Numeric digits (0 through 9)
    - Non-alphanumeric characters (special characters such as '-!"#$%&()*,./:;?@[]^_`{|}~+<=>)

     

  3. Check your Student Email
    After activating your account, go to the Outlook app and follow the steps below based on your device type...

    For iOS (Apple):
    a. Press Add account and enter your username in the format of [email protected] and then your password on the next page.
    b. When asked if you would like to add other account, tap Skip
    c. If you chose to get notified, tap OK at the Outlook would like to send you notification pop-up

    For Android:

    a. Tap Get Started
    b. Outlook may detect your Google accounts – tap Skip
    c. Tap Set up another email account and enter your username in the format of [email protected] and then your password on the next page. 
    d. Verify your identity using multi-factor authentication

     

  4. That's it! You are now ready to start using your IT account. 
    Regularly check your Ravensbourne email using the Outlook app or via the web. It’s where you’ll receive key information from the university and your tutors throughout your time at Ravensbourne.
