Working for Safety (1979)

Concept and creative process

‘Working for Safety’ was a series of films produced by BBC Further Education Department specifically for all those involved in health and safety at work, as safety representatives needed to be constantly informed of the latest developments. The budget for the title sequence was limited, so a fully animated sequence would have been prohibitive. Instead a series of scenarios was agreed upon and a drawing style chosen. A series of drawings were devised that could be animated simply. The fewest number of drawings possible were created with the intention of mixing between them during the film rostrum camera shoot to give the impression of movement. The addition of camera moves helped to enhance the illusion even more. The audio was added at the end to the finished piece.

Drawing and Animation - Bob Cosford.
