The Two Ronnies (1977)

Concept and creative process

Titles for a comedy sketch show featuring the double act of Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. The titles for the show featured the iconic signature specs, forever associated with ‘The Two Ronnies’. The top pair was always Ronnie Barker’s with Ronnie Corbett’s pair beneath. In this sequence they zoomed up together to centre screen, panning off screen in opposite directions as the show’s title panned across behind the lenses to centre screen. The titles were filmed on a rostrum camera with airbrushed artwork of the specs and the title lettering and a separate matte run to enlarge the type within the lenses. The portraits of the two stars were cut out and mounted on a black background and revealed in stages together with the type, using their specs as the leitmotif.
