The State of Democracy (1989)

Concept and creative process

'The State of Democracy' was a series of five programmes, screened during the course of one week and presented by Jonathan Dimbleby on BBC Two. The topics examined and discussed ranged from civil liberty and freedom of access to information to the unwritten constitution, devolution and giving the people a greater say in politics. In the title sequence for these programmes, designer Jane Walker created a monochrome montage over model shots of a Greek amphitheatre, which set the scene for the week-long debate of important national questions that was to follow.
