Sportsnight (1985)

Concept and creative process

'Sportsnight' was the very first computer generated title sequence produced by a BBC designer and was a risky operation to attempt. Computer-generated animation was in its infancy and rendering times were slow and threatened to jeopardize the on-air deadline for this production. As time was short, Darrell's solution was to film the boxing glove scene on 35mm film instead, lit to simulate CGI. The computer generated scenes were created at Electronic Arts, and cut in among them, the analogue scene is accepted by the eye of the viewer without question.

Winner of a Design & Art Direction Wood Pencil for Television Graphics 1986.
