On the Record (1978)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘On The Record’, a long-running weekly series, in which each week the presenter was joined by two guest interviewers for BBC 2's TV press conference. National and international figures, people who were in the news or who made news, discussed and explained their views and intentions. This was a low budget sequence, and photographs were given to me to use by the production. I decided to try to create a 'newsy' feel for it by making use of stylised news print. I designed the logo with an enlarged dot screen effect, as seen in printed newspapers. Big close-ups of the logo were then used as transitions between the photographs. Everything was shot in-camera with the white logo close-up superimposed over the background image, which then wiped to black behind the logo and cut to the next image clean. The audio was pre-recorded.
