Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm (1978)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for ‘Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm’, an adaptation by Constance Cox of the popular American classic by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The house used for the exterior location filming of the drama series was copied in a bee-hive pattern design of the Brick House where Rebecca went to live with her aunts. On a film rostrum camera, the individual hexagonal patches were shot animating on in a series of four-frame mixes, gradually building up the whole image. A pause was built-in to allow reading time for the credits, which were overlayed on cels over the bare canvas backing of the fabric artwork before the final completion of the whole image.
