Concept and creative process
Titles for ‘Open Space’, a long-running series that enabled members of the public to make programmes under their own editorial control. Early computer animation was used to generate the artwork for these titles. The computer-generated images of the exploding wall were printed out onto clear cels at Imperial College London. These cels were then back-painted, as in traditional animation. This automatically created mattes which could be used in a back-lit run to create the light effects on a rostrum camera. I worked with Professor John Vince, the author of the Picasso system, who was at the forefront of the development of CGI in this country.
