Maths File (1998)

Concept and creative process

Titles for ‘Maths File’, a programme for schools, aimed at 11 to 13 year olds, using drama to demonstrate the use of maths in everyday life. A spherical printing element, reminiscent of the action of the revolutionary IBM golf ball typewriter from the 1960s, was created in 3D computer graphics for the title sequence. It demonstrated its ability to do mathematical calculations and display the result electronically. The animation was composited over a CGI background of ever-increasing circular water ripples, containing the BBC Education logo, over which animating random numbers and geometric shapes were superimposed.
