Concept and creative process

A documentary series of seven programmes which explored love and marriage in different cultures around the world. The concept was to use a multi-faceted prism shape, which reflected various scenes, as a visual metaphor for the series editorial. The prism was made from a transparent resin then polished to a high finish. Using a motion control rig the prism was shot stop frame over several passes on 35mm film. After a prism beauty pass, live action scenes were set up and projected onto each facet one at a time. These passes were then combined optically which enabled total control over the transparency of each subject.
