Lernexpress (1990)

Concept and creative process

'Lernexpress' was a multi-media, two-year GCSE course in the German language and everyday life. The brief for the titles was to show some of the interesting sites and customs that students would encounter during the course. The designer took as a starting point the blue and white diamond chequered flag of Bavaria and used this to generate further diagonal splits and wipes with which to incorporate the programme footage. Many of the shots were also tinted blue or enhanced in the telecine process to give the whole sequence a predominantly blue and white tint, while still retaining some of the natural flesh tones. All of the images were composited and animated in digital post-production.
