Concept and creative process
The documentary series 'Island Race' was about a journey around Britain in a classic sailing boat. Sandi Toksvig and John McCarthy were the presenters. For the titles I wanted to show the journey as a series of scenes and to reflect the quirkiness of the boat and the situations they found themselves in. Models of the theatre surround, the lighthouse, seagulls, boat etc. were made specifically for the shoot. Parts of them had to animate e.g. the seagulls, others had to move e.g. the waves. The models were shot as individual elements and Sandi and John were shot with some props, others were added later. The whole thing was composited on Henry at Framestore by Chris Mortimer.
