Concept and creative process
The 'Hamish Macbeth' drama series based in Lochdubh (real life Plockton) centred around a police man, Hamish Macbeth, and had an eccentric group of characters and quirky plot lines. The titles needed to be overtly Scottish and incorporate the main character, some pleasing scenery, a highland cow and a lobster! Vintage postcards with crinkle cut edges provided the device for framing the live action; animating patchworks of tartan provided the wipes from one scene to the next. The tartan was bought on a trip to the location and chosen for its vibrant colours. It was washed and left to dry naturally to give a crumpled finish and the edges were frayed. An artwork of the postcard with the crinkled edges was made and positioned with different tartans. The lobster (very tricky to work with!) and other props were filmed in a small studio and all the material was composited on a Quantel Harry.
