Growing Pains (1992)

Concept and creative process

These titles for the drama series ‘Growing Pains’ were shot on 35mm film. Filmed on location at Osterley Park, two dancers were choregraphed dancing on the main entrance steps to the historic house. The camera was mounted on a Fisher dolly and included some shots with the dolly mounted on tracks. The footage was edited to length and then the live action material of the actors was tracked to the motion of the steps, and optically integrated onto them as if it were being projected. The title typography was also digitally opticalled in Quantel Henry. It was an object lesson in how to satisfy the production’s desire to see the faces of the starring actors, while giving the whole sequence flair, intrigue and a satisfying design entity.
