Grange Hill (2003)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for a classic children's drama serial which portrayed life in a London mixed comprehensive school. The designer developed a scenario telling the story of one pupil’s average school day from wake-up alarm call to relaxing in front of his bedroom TV after school. Visually the story unfolded in a series of overlapping animated vignettes of school life derived from production footage and the specially shot scenes of the boy’s bedroom which bookended the sequence. A low-angle close-up shot of feet in school shoes making their way towards camera formed a monochrome background to the coloured vignettes of live action footage, and again in the final shot, to the iconic ‘Grange Hill’ school shield and main title.
