Everyman: Darwin's Origin of Species - programme sequence (1980)

Concept and creative process

For an 'Everyman' programme on Darwin, his Theory of Evolution was required to be shown graphically, so a 3D solution was agreed. A storyboard was drawn showing the major developments from worm to human child. Aardman Animation was commissioned to create the sequences. The main evolutionary stages were produced from plasticine together with some 'in betweens'. Keeping a simple look of grey on a white background the animation was produced frame by frame modelling the 'in betweens' carefully into and out of each major stage of the evolution animation.
