Concept and creative process
Opening titles for Malcolm Bradbury's adaptation of the comedy classic by Stella Gibbons, directed by John Schlesinger. The animated titles took over from the opening live action establishing shot of the run-down farmhouse. The artwork was set up as a multiplane animation of foreground, middle ground and background levels of drawings, cut out on long panning cels and arranged vertically above each other. The panning of the rostrum camera bench captured different actions simultaneously and created a pleasing natural parallax effect as the levels moved past each other.
