Catch Hand (1964)

Concept and creative process

The 'catch hand' of the title of this 1964 drama series was the name for an itinerant casual labourer, moving from one construction site to another around the country, never stopping anywhere long enough to put down roots. Designer Bernard Lodge was eager to use the power of the moving image to create the opening titles for the series and spent a day filming with a BBC crew on a construction site, finding visually interesting shots of building work, machinery and scaffolding with which to edit his sequence to the music that had been written for the series.
