Black and Blue - The Middle of the Road Roadshow (1973)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for one play in a series of stand-alone television comedy drama plays. For some reason the production chose not to use the generic titles that Dick Bailey had created for the series and asked him to find just a simple typographic solution instead for this play. The music was originally written for the 24-second generic sequence and so it was a long time to sustain a single caption. There was no budget for a new title but fortunately the show’s title was rather long. Dick Bailey played around with the words and displayed them in sync with the music on a grid of white lines, building them up individually and finally all together followed by the writer’s credit.
