A Bit of Fry & Laurie (1989)

Concept and creative process

Opening titles for the first series of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie's eccentric sketch show. The photographs on the cards were shot while Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie were filming spoof vox pops in Ealing High Street and the remainder were made by designer Liz Jones (Varrall). The hand artist/card dealer was Christine Buttner, at the time an assistant designer, later a designer in her own right. The action was filmed directly under a rostrum camera in real time. The skeleton card that got left behind was a happy accident and had no great significance. Hugh Laurie, himself a blues pianist, was a long-time fan of Professor Longhair and his ‘Mardi Gras in New Orleans’ which was adopted as the title music.
