Big Science (1995)

Concept and creative process

An enigmatic title sequence for ‘Big Science’, a magazine series which investigated the relationship between science and modern society. The sequence was filmed in a number of locations and edited and post-produced to create the effects. The maintitle itself was cut up into syllables and set in different typefonts, which appeared separately in different shots until the whole title was finally revealed on a large screen set in a pebble beach. The footage was all desaturated and turned to monochrome with the exception of the word ‘Big’ in the main title, the only colour element in the entire sequence. More Art than Science, this sequence nevertheless succeeded in heightening curiosity for what was to come in this magazine series whose programmes dealt with wide-ranging subject matter.
