Auntie - The Inside Story of the BBC (1997)

Concept and creative process

A title sequence for a documentary series about the BBC itself. The brief was to portray a feeling of the history of the Corporation, together with the variety and diversity of the Programming and Events it covered. Live action of various parts of the buildings, such as the exterior of Broadcasting House, Television Centre and the statue of Helios the sun god in the centre circle of Television Centre, were shot on tape. Animated circles reminiscent of the early BBC animating brand icon were used as a graphic device and to wipe on the live action images supplied by the production team, as well as circles of type to iterate the content shown. Artwork for a logo was created on Paintbox, and the sequence was edited and composited on Quantel Harry at Framestore by Mike McGee.
