Concept and creative process
The idea was to create the look of a well travelled old suitcase or brown paper parcel using rubber stamps from passports. The models were shot and post-produced at Framestore with Mike McGee. Michael Palin was filmed in advance on 35mm film in one day in a studio with a variety of props. The Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty were model shoots. The backgrounds and illustrations were created or manipulated on a Quantel Paintbox. Everything was composited using Quantel Harry.
Concept and Creative Direction - Liz Friedman.
Nominated for a BAFTA Craft Award for Television Graphic Design 1990.
Finalist at the International Monitor Awards.

Around the World in 80 Days model, press pack and book

Model of the Eiffel Tower used in the title sequence. The model, made of solid steel, is 59cm high, weighing over 5 kilos and was purchased at the time from the Eiffel Tower merchandising company in Paris. The model came in 4 parts (the very top is now secured with glue). The model was shot on a revolving turntable and was then treated to look like animating flat artwork. This was done on a Quantel Harry operated by Mike McGee at the Framestore.
