Antiques Roadshow (1987)

Concept and creative process

The title sequence for series 9 of ‘Antiques Roadshow’ saw a change of direction in style. It was still animated at the top and tail of the sequence, but emphasis was now placed on showing real objects vignetted on patterned coloured backgrounds, designed in the style of decorative wrapping paper, with motifs drawn from objects featured in the different categories of the show. In the second animated section the newspaper parcel wrapping revealed the programme logo and a UK map as if they were the decoration on a china plate, with the upcoming locations for the show marked on it. Wendy Carlos’s ‘Switched-On’ version of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3 still underscored the titles, but it was now played by a solo oboe backed by synthesised strings.
