Concept and creative process
In 1974 Sid Sutton designed a bold new-look '2' which was composed of alternating white and pale blue stripes on a mid blue background. The animation for this '2' was again created by a NODDY device, triggered remotely on cue by the Continuity Announcer in the Presentation Studio gallery. The device consisted of a stack of plates filmed edge on. The stripes of the '2' were painted in the alternating colours of pale blue and white on the edge viewed by the camera. As the plates were alternately geared to move on cue simultaneously in opposite directions, the image could break up from a striped whole '2' to reform again a few seconds later. In this clip the animation occurs between 11 and 14 seconds from the start.
