BBC News - countdown trail (2003)

Concept and creative process

A 70-second version of a countdown sequence designed to lead up to the hourly news bulletin. It was populated with a beautifully edited compilation of pixellated images speeding up reality, intercut with normal speed activity, all combining to give a broad overview of society at work and play, as the numerical clock clicked inexorably down to 00. The music, specially composed by David Lowe for BBC News, drove the pace with its urgency, incorporating, as a prominent feature, the relentless repetition of the BBC pips, which were already so familiar from the hourly news broadcast on BBC Radio.
